The Second City Training Center

Throughout my tenure as a designer at the second city, I’ve consistently served as the lead designer for our training centers. I’ve been given a ton of free rein and have had some amazing opportunities to push how we think about marketing to future comedians.

I was the production designer for the large soffit mural that can be seen from the corner of North and Wells. This is in the new space that completed its expansion in Spring of 2016. The 114 ft. environmental graphic is now a huge feature in our visibility from the street and makes a solid imprint in the Old Town landscape.

Each year, the Second City Training Center releases a catalog of courses available to take in each of their cities. This is the first time I completely Art Directed the project, as well as playing a role in the copy editing. The catalog led the path to a honed in look and feel for the training center. This piece is the winner of a How International Design Award for 2016.

As I revisited the challenge of Art Directing the 2018 course catalog for The Second City Training center, I wanted to push the focus to what it looks like inside an improv scene. I wanted to show energy passing between scene partners and acknowledge the limitless possibilities of improv. Take a closer look at this catalog here.

With every piece of new Training Center branding collateral I have been able to take a step into speaking directly to our consumers. Over my tenure I’ve been able to watch our efforts go from whimsical, but un-relatable to energetic and authentic. I feel like the graphics actually relate to the experience inside of our classrooms and our minds as improvisers.

Below is a large collection of art that I produced for various classes in The Second City Training Center curricula. This was one of my first projects. We were focused on making each class have something unique and intriguing. I developed a style using various stock images to emulate the whimsy and fun side of improvisation and comedy.
